Some common questions which nearly everyone has when going for counseling:

1. How does Saharanpur being a separate campus affect the life ?

As you would probably know the campus is about 50 Km frm Roorkee and I hope u understand the limitations of a separate campus. The facilities are not as good as compared to the main campus, but your most demands will be satisfied completely. There are usually about 200 students in the campus, this year the number may go up because of one more course process engineering which I am told is opening from this year.

2. What is the placement scenario ?

There is usually 100% placement in our department however most of the students prefer to work for software firms because of better work culture, location and most importantly pay packages of software industry, but this trend is similar in any other non-traditional branches(read computer science, electronics and electrical). The average salary is about 300,000 p.a (excluding the overseas placement; including it, it shoots up to 500,000 p.a).

3. Opportunities for higher studies???

This department gives you ample opportunities to go abroad for higher studies as well as internship. An appropriate testimony is the current Third Year batch in which all the 24 students have gone for internship abroad. I am told this is the only department in seven IITs where this has happened. You will get enough options in core area but to seek for better opportunities and diversifications many students have changed their field of study to allied areas like chemical, energy, environment, public policy, etc. But shifting to computer science might be a tough option.

4. What is the chances of branch change ?

If you have read the counseling brochure properly, you must be aware of the rules that govern branch change. Only top 10% of the branch strength is allowed to change branch if they have a G.P.A at the end of first year >7.5 and that too if there is vacancy in the upper branches. This means it is not as easy as it sounds. But over the years department has witnessed some extraordinary cases of branch changes. But don't expect to change your branch to computer science or electronics. It is not impossible but too tough given the pressure as well as mentality of some teachers. Branch change depends on one's individual capability of doing hardwork. So please don't bank on branch change

5. I have offer from Pilani, I can go to IT BHU etc. etc. What should I do??

My first assertion is - you never know what you have can get till the counseling is over. Since some new courses are introduced this year, you may stand chance in some other department. But in my opinion, meta and civil are no better than pulp and paper if you forget the separate campus thing. It is you who have to decide, how much worth do you think IIT tag is. My personal experience say - It creates wonders for you if you dream for abroad. For MBA it is a good thing on CV. for job it does not matter much. But IIT tag is sure going to help you in all your future life some way or other.

Some other good as well as bad factors very specific to paper tech.
1) Since it is a small and separate campus you will get chance to do many things on your own, like starting new clubs/activities which may be difficult in main campus, but you will miss some good events at the main campus because of the distance.
2) I don't think the course adds much value to you but it leaves you with abundant time to pursue your interests which you cant do at other iits.

Separate Campus is the most worrying factor for most prospective students will be the separate campus thing.
Heres my take on it...I tend to look at every factor based on what youre actually after...
so if your going for

MBA

the separate campus is a definite plus here. Also the fact that P&P is an out of the way branch will help your prospects... The experience is unique and you get lots of time away from academics to pursue extracurriculars that are all important for being a well rounded MBA candidate.
Also this is one of the branches where academic pressure is minimum and you can take time out for MBA entrance preparation and still get good grades...

MS/PhD further studies

BIG negative here...atleast from my point of view... if you are interested in higher studies you shouldnt be taking up a branch that is not of your interest. It is stupid to think that you can get the IIT tag here and then shift branches...this is possible but way too difficult for anything other than chemical and environmetal engg etc.

You'd be much better off taking a branch of your choice in a decent second rung institution and exceling in your field of interest.

Job

here the separate campus factor plays no part at all.. irrespective of which branch you are in(except compsci, eee,ece etc), the current economic situation guarantees that u'll get a decent enuf software job if you r not stupid(all u have to do is maintain a CG >6)(very easy)

if you r looking for a job and have an option of getting the Circuit branches (compsci,ee etc) in another insti like BITs then i suggest you go for tht....

Placement stats and highlights: Placement at IITs generates a lot of media hype; but the picture they paint of placement at IITs is incorrect. Websites like rediff.com, which unfortunately have a good reach, don’t have well researched articles. The number of candidates getting international jobs at IITs may be well below 4 %. But I am not surprised when wannabe IITians have the impression that everyone in IITs get a 25-lakh rupee job.

We would be bringing to you the real campus placement statistics at colleges with a special focus on non-computer science branches.

To start with we go to placement at Department of Paper Technology, IIT Roorkee, this branch is an offbeat branch. It may figure last on the list of anyone going for engineering job.

The placement figure does not indicate real aspirations of the students as these days the placement at IITs starts after 7th semester or half of fourth year is over. By that time, GRE score/ CAT is out/over so guys going to Stanford/ IIMs may not push themselves hard for the job (some may miss the placement altogether). The idea of having a job just for backup does not motivate you to be selective.
