CSC - review for freshers, Wednesday, 23 July 2008
CSC Brand
CSC is the third largest IT services company ranked 4 & 5 in 05 & 06 respectively. Fortune Rank is 141 and has 48 years of experience, 11th year in India. 70% revenue comes from the Federal Govt. Projects, Dept of Defense, NASA etc , second largest after EDS in Infrastructure support services. From the Apollo 11 to Path Finder on mars all used CSC's Technology.
Work Culture

Salary/Hike
Regarding the package whatever gross salary would be mentioned on your offer letter, you would be getting the same amount. There is no deduction in the salary! You get a good in hand salary in CSC!!
Hike in your package depends on your performance. You will be appraised twice in a year and salary will be increased once basis these two appraisals ratings. While working with CSC, you'll not only have a good package, but you'll also have an unending road of learning and trainings. CSC believes in providing world class tech. and dev. trainings to its employees. Believe me, you'll grow not only financially but skill wise, and again it depends on the person. If you do not wish to grow, you can't, whether it's CSC or Microsoft. I hope you've got your answer.
Training
An Intern is your designation for the first year. According to 2005: Guys getting 20k ka package got into GIS and 25k package people got into FSG/GTS depending on the requirement! They ask the passport details for FSG and GTS guys as they get good onsite opportunities. Not required for GIS guys!! You won't be getting much of Onsite opportunities! GIS is all about giving support to your client! No development is involved!
And you cannot change your department atleast for 2 years! And after 2 years you wouldn't want to!
Regarding training: I have already mentioned many things about GIS. For GIS the first three months will be training which will consist of A+ basic hardware training, CCNA and then project specific training. Project specific training will vary from team to team. Some will go for MCSE related training some will go for Unix related. Other fields include Networks, DBA, Scripting, Monitoring, etc. You will also undergo one week voice and accent training.
Similarly a note on training. Yes, I agree CSC has an excellent training and development program; but in my experience most of the learning happen through on the job training. The work that you'll do in CSC won't be that challenging. Additionally you have very little chance of interacting with the end clients. These things would be big negatives on your resume when you try to switch.
Work
CSC is a services company! Not much of development is there in FSG and GTS as well! You support the existing software! Regarding GIS, yes you need to work in shifts. You need to provide support to your client. Your shift timings/night shifts depend upon your client. You might work in UNIX ,Windows (System Administration) might go into networking field, there are lots of subdivisions in GIS as well your division will be told to you after you join CSC!!
Facilities
In Noida 8th CSC building is coming up shortly!! The divisions are FSG/GTS (termed as systems) and GIS.

Wipro - Freshers, Tuesday, 22 July 2008
This is for freshers:
Training facts
On the day of reporting itself we were told that we will be having our training (called as FRP) through NIIT. You will get your FRP training location on the day of joining.
PRP location u will get during FRP. There are many centers where you can be sent for training. NIIT people will come to that centre to take your classes.
For 1st 15 days we are having training on C, DS, UNIX and some OOPS concept. Training is ok, 4 hrs lab and 4 hrs lectures. (9:30 to 5:30). Our batch is of 72, luckily all were sent to same NIIT centre for training. We were provided with the lunch, coffee but no accommodation.
They will teach software Engg practices and software development life cycle. They will give a topic.
*FRP (Fundamental Readiness Program)
*CRP (Corporate Readiness Program)
*PRP (Project Readiness Program)
*RLL (Real Life Lab)
2 domains were allotted to our batch. - Java/oracle & Microsoft
38 are in Microsoft & rest are in java/oracle
Non-IT: Don't think that if you are from Non-IT u can't sustain in this Company.....
All That matters is that your Talent and Hard Working.
Don't take any permanent accommodation in the first week or second.
My suggestion is that make some temporary arrangements first (lodge) after getting exact training location (NIIT). You can join a PG near by that for one month. So you can avoid travel. Here (Banglore) travel is difficult. PGs (2000 to 4000) are available in most of the locations.
After that you can take a house along with your friends near your exact working location. Generally people are allocated in electronic city office.
If training location differs from permanent location then you will get Rs 200/day for the entire training.
Domain, you will be getting after joining but domain & location are independent.
Most probably you will be getting p.l (permanent location) & domain just after joining.
The books they provide are enough for a good student.
If you have you can take following books
Let Us C, Test Your C skills, Test your Unix skills, Understanding pointers, Data Structures and the rest depends on your domain.
We have to do that project; it will be a team work, most probably 2 persons per team. One it guy and one non-it. Only objective questions (online exam) with 100 questions.
Training/Branch does not matter much - projects and verticals can be changed based on demand
Documents and Joining Formalities
You should reach here at least one day before joining; you can stay in some hotel. On first day there are a lot of joining formalities. You can complete that in one day.
Then you will get your training location; according to that you can take some temporary PG.
You have to get one salary account (SBI or citibank or both), then one ERA account (Employee Reimbursement Account) to credit all the reimbursements. You have to fill the forms for that and complete the SBI formalities. You have to sign the bond (in stamp paper).
You have to bring a DD of minimum 5476, rest you can take (70,000) as a loan from SBI (all according to SBI kit which you will receive) otherwise you can bring a DD of 75476, after paying all the money you have to bring around 6 photos. You have to bring all certificates including provisional certificate along with the final marksheet (including 8th semester marks). You should have more than two photocopies of all the things. At the end of the day u will receive your Wipro Id card.
Salary
3 packages were there for 2006 batch
2.04, 2.16 & 2.6
all postgraduate people get 2.6
Most circuit branch people got 2.16
Rest 2.04 (colleges are given preferences)
Your salary, after training, is determined by the score you get.
Score = (30% of FRP) + (50% of PRP) + (20% of RLL)
Work
During training 9.5hr/day but this is the official timings. If you get some work everything changes .i.e. all depend on your work. If it is some simple thing you can reduce the time.
If you are in a tough tight schedule development you can be here up to 12, that is the time of the last cab, if you are working after 10 you can get free cab to your home.
Facility
Company's canteen is awesome, there u get all kind of food north Indian, south Indian, non-veg, just about everything and that too at really affordable rates. Hyderabad - little language problem is there.

Teradata, Saturday, 29 December 2007
Salary: It gives a fresher salary of 3.1 lakhs per annum; the salary levels are low for those who don't have experience in Teradata's internal code, but sometimes it pays a premium for those who have experience in their product. But there is huge dissatisfaction amongst the employees in the beginning because other companies doing similar work pay much generously and the salary hikes are low.
Career Growth: Teradata's code probably contains everything a person can learn in computer science engineering, from parsing engine to file system. It is difficult to understand initially as it has millions of lines of code and lakhs of lines are added in every new release. Only those should join who are seriously interested in internals of database technology, compilers and system programming and more importantly those who want to stay in this company for a long period of time. Joining this company for a few years does not make any sense, as the learning curve is very steep.
Career growth varies from individual to individual; and there are no onsite assignments.
Most of the employees are unhappy with the management as they feel the promises made to them are not kept. Much of the work being done is testing and debugging (maintenance of product). Though there are few development teams and they boast of 8-9 patents every year.
Training: The Company does not provide much training apart from giving some manuals, internal sessions and videos.
Work Environment: It is a small company and in the name of facilities they have very little to offer. There are flexible timings and the actual flexibility depends on project manager under whom you work.
Brand Value: People outside software industry may not have heard about this company, but the product is great one so techies know about it.
Work Life Balance: Workload is less compared to other companies except in few teams.
Job Security: Difficult to predict as they have thrown out employees over seemingly trivial issues.
Co-workers competence: Mostly poor, all the good people leave the company soon.
Bond: There is no fresh engineer employment bond system in the company.
Facilities: Facilities are not good and the company seldom cares about employee recreation facilities.

Datawarehousing Jobs, Friday, 09 November 2007
What is data warehousing?
A datawarehouse typically is repository of all the historical data of a company. For a retail company like WalMart, the datawarehouse has all the sales and customer preference data. This historical data can be effectively used to forecast/predict their sales, and using business intelligence techniques they can also be used to increase their sales. Let me give you an example of how it is used. When the September 11 2000, Twin Tower crash took place in US, WalMart was able to predict within 5 hours the items which are going to having increased sales in coming days. During events of national tragedy sales of US flags increase so Walmart bought all the flags available in market to sell in the next few days.
How good a field is datawarehousing? Which companies have these projects?
Data warehousing is one of the hottest fields in the IT industry, may be because it is difficult to find experienced people in this field and almost every big company has some kind of data warehousing system or is planning to upgrade it, which means lot of projects for Software Services companies. All services companies like IBM, Accenture, Capgemini, EDS, Covansys, Wipro and TCS have projects in this fields. Amongst Indian companies Satyam has been aggressively building datawarehousing project handling capabilities. Most of the clients for these projects are retail chains, telecom companies and banks.
What are various job profiles in datawarehousing projects?
The following are the different profiles in a typical datawarehouse project.
# Project Manager: This person will oversee the progress and be responsible for the success of the data warehousing project.
# DBA: This role is responsible to keep the database running smoothly.
# Technical Architect: This role is responsible for developing and implementing the overall technical architecture of the data warehouse.
# ETL Developer: This role is responsible for developing the extraction, transformation, and loading routine for the data warehouse.
# Front End Developer: This person is responsible for developing the front-end, whether it be client-server or over the web.
# OLAP Developer: This role is responsible for the development of OLAP cubes.
# Trainer: A person on the data warehouse team needs to work with the end users to get them familiar with how the front end is set up so that the end users can get the most benefit out of the data warehouse system.
# Data Modeler: This role is responsible for taking the data structure that exists in the enterprise and model it into a schema that is suitable for OLAP analysis.
# QA Group: This role is responsible for ensuring the correctness of the data in the data warehouse.
What are the skills required for a datawarehousing job?
Data warehouses use a database as the heart of the datawarehouse and several other tools for analysis of data. In fact the market for applications and tools built around data warehouses is much larger than market for databases. But strong skills in SQL are a must for these jobs. Following are some of the popular databases and tools used in DW, technical expertise with these tools and databases are key to a good job in this field. You can be an expert in any one of the following databases/tools.
Databases
Oracle
Microsoft SQL Server
IBM DB2
Teradata
Sybase
MySQL
ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Loading) Tools
IBM WebSphere Information Integration (Ascential DataStage)
Ab Initio
Informatica
OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) Tools
Business Objects
Cognos
Hyperion
Microsoft Analysis Services
MicroStrategy
Reporting Tools
Business Objects (Crystal Reports)
Cognos

Brand Value
Brand is perception in the eyes of customers. As per IDBI Ltd is concerned, it has limited Braches in India 7 very prevalent in Metro and B-Class Cities. The name IDBI creates different Brand value to different segment of customers.
First level Customer (Employees)- if you are Interested to work in Banking Sector with fat starting perks, then organization will be next to RBI.
(After five Yrs of Working, people rarely dares to leave organization, or other dynamic/private Bank hesitate to hire them except you are self motivated)
Second level Customer- Origination is very good by infrastructure, location of Branches is very good but no of Branch and BABU-ism (Govt. Attitude) is prevalent in employees.
Some products like Home Loan of Fixed Deposit is good and Profit center for the bank.
Career Growth.
Once you recruited, you may have feel-good with you. An amusing perks like well-furnished house, Car and different allowances may attract you but that may be limit of your satisfaction in organization, because growth is very minimal (Onsite Opportunity
Nil, except you are on some higher post for eligible to attend some SEMINAR or Symposium sort of things that is only for few days.
Work Environment
It’s a government Bank. The one point, which is very strong, is you have exposure as per your interest and more avenues to learn rather than working in small units, but you needs to be self-motivated.
Work Pressure/ life Balance
Cool, you can get everything except fat amount after certain period of working in the organization. Hell lot of scheduled leave is there with paid/ unpaid leaves.
Satisfaction of salary and Quality of Job
You will realize after working one year that Salary is proportional to your effort in organization. Quality of Job is O.K. If you are dreaming to reach the sky, then don’t’ dare to join organization, in case you opted don’t’ live more than one years.
As Infrastructure is very good, there are chances that after management change; most of negatives may be sorted out
Type of Work-
IDBI Ltd is a Banking Service Industry. It had Funded Most of the successful Business Houses. If you randomly select five organizations three must be funded by IDBI, you can take..BSC, Reliance, tata, Bharti or ITC etc
Job Security
If you are in probation period and you slapped your BOSS, then there are chances of your firing after certain paper work. That disciplinary action would be by the HR Department.
Some Positive and negative of the company
(+) ve Points
You will feel like Officer, just after Campus you would be in your office provided House.
You have facility to opt any service area in Banking Domain, as per you interest
Bank promote for a better life at time of just joining, Car Allowance and other allowance as par of RBI employee.
Medical Facility just after joining, you can access medical services free of cost in different Hospitals over the country.
(-) ve Points

Government work culture
Brand Value in Private Banks is not good.
My recommendation
The aforesaid statement made is only my perception about the bank it can be easily vary from person to person and with time/place of working. Your decision is precious for you, and may affect your life forever.

Yasu Tech - Hyderabad, Thursday, 08 November 2007
Brand value, Career growth and onsite opportunities?
Brand Value- If your are talking about Brand Value of YASU then answer is below average brand value. In market people know about YASU’s product QuickRules but they are not aware of YASU itself as a company.
Career growth- Career growth is good for the initial 2 yrs of your carrer, if you are joining as a fresher, after that the prospect are not so green as employee growth is somewhere linked with company and YASU growth rate is not so good.
Onsite opportunities- depend upon your team
PSG Team- Yes, onsite opportunities are there
Developers Team- No
How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department?
Work environment is nice, flexi timing, very few dead lines.
Communication b/w teams or department- it’s depend upon you and your interaction with your Manager/Tech Lead.
Work pressure/Work – life balance.Again depend upon your Manager; otherwise work pressure is not as such high.
Satisfaction with salary and quality of work.
Salaries are OK type but quality of work is really good for the starting two years for a fresher as he get good exposure to software development. For mid-level I don’t think it is a right choice.
What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? Product development of their product Quick-rules, which is available in following two domains- java and dot-net.
Job security- Again depend upon your performance.
Technology/Platform/Language your company work.
Java and Microsoft technologies
Some positives and negatives of the company.
Small company, No formals, flexi timing, good interaction, friendly environment, good work for initial years of career
Average Salary, Poor Management, No Facilities like canteen, initial accommodation arrangements, lack of good amenities as compare to other companies of same level.
Do you recommend your company to others? Yes or No and Why?
If you are fresher and you don’t have other good options then answer can be YES as you can stay here for few years (depend upon you) and get chance to learn new things.
For others guys, answer is NO, try to explore some other good opportunities as they are available in the market.
Vital Statistics:
Fresher Salary- 3.45 lakh/annum
Total No of employees- 150 (approximate)
India headcount- 110
Salary Hike- 15- 25 %
Bonuses- Just for the sake of name, I can say minuscule in the comparison of market standards.

Career growth and onsite opportunities? onsite opportunity for 3 months in US, good promotion in the company.
How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department? Ambience is good. In Chennai u may face the problem in speaking with Tamil colleague. You’ll have daily conf call with US colleague. so you can enhance ur communications with them.
Work pressure/Work – life balance. Work pressure varies with projects. You’ll have to stay late night to attend the conf call inspite of less work pressure.
Satisfaction with salary and quality of work: u may satisfy with the salary but not kind of work.
What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? Product dev.
Job security. Good
Some positives and negatives of the company. Good salary but late night stay for conf call will mar ur personal life.

TCS, Thursday, 08 November 2007
Brand Value: Brand Value is great. “Tata” name is sufficient to impress anyone.
Work culture: Its like Indian govt job. A lot of complacency and politics go hand-in hand.
Work-pressure: Not much but depends on the project and your supervisor also. If your supervisor is a workaholic person he wants you too to sit back upto 9 pm and won’t like you to leave office even if you don’t have any work in office for the day.
Bench concept: Best in the industry. If you’re a fresher don’t expect work for the first 6 months or so. But you’ve to come to the office every day from 9 to 6.
Salary: 2.14 lakh to 2.36 lakhs. (Never trust any HR’s promises. They make false promises before hiring like “…the package has been increased and has been revised but its not getting reflected on the offer letter right now. Once you join the company you’ll get a revised offer letter.”)
Dress code: Have to wear formals, always.
Job Security: Very high
Co-workers competencies: Poor.
Recommendation: If you want a peaceful life TCS is the best but if you’ve high aspirations in terms of your career growth DON’T ever join it.

Brand value, Career growth and onsite opportunities?
Brand value - Good, These things depend on your department and projects, this could be very different for person to
person. But yeah, onsite opportunities and career growth is good for people who are from H/W, VLSI background.
How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department?
Work environment is good. People are cooperative and good opportunity to pust your voice at any
level…. Communication b/w employees and management is good as for as i think.
Work pressure/Work – life balance. Well organized teams and work culture, This is a big plus point for ST. In fact ST kind of forces its employees to make a balance in their work and personal life, many forced leaves…n not much work load. Fixed daily 9.30 -5.30
routine job.
Satisfaction with salary and quality of work. Salary…is not good. Ur take home salary could be very less, but yea still fair enough. for freshers its around 5 LPA package but take home would be around 30000 PM, Quality of work will be different from one person to another.
People are expected to do their job independently here based on their skills set.
What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? All type of work…. product development as well as services( for internal ST only, not for others I think), basically
its a semiconductor product development company
Job security. Its Good. There is no policy of firing in ST India (especially), but they do lot of cost cutting
Technology/Platform/Language your cos work. Many technologies…both in H/w and S/W domain. Everything as per latest technologies in Embedded software and
Hardware fields…also core IT like JAVA. .NET etc
Some positives and negatives of the company.
Positive - your work and life balance, brand, cool work culture
Negative - I don’t think anything, but yea i m sure it would be different for others. May b somewhat take home
salary…
Do you recommend your company to others? Yes or No and Why? For freshers it’s good to join this company. If they plan for further studies or so…they can manage that being here and for experienced people I think may not be a good option if their priority is money.
Also for freshers who want to develop their career technically being with organization, ST is a good option.
